EVALUATION OF A LOUVERED PANEL FOR USE AS FREEWAY SIGN BACKGROUND
LARGE SIGNS ERECTED ALONG THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM PRESENTLY REQUIRE MASSIVE SUPPORTS TO RESIST THE RESULTANT WIND LOADING. THIS REPORT INCLUDES DESCRIPTIONS OF THE FIELD OPERATIONS, TEST PROCEDURES, INSTRUMENTATION, AND COST ANALYSIS OF A SOLID LOUVERED SIGN BACKGROUND ON AN OVERHEAD SIGN STRUCTURE AND A GROUND MOUNT INSTALLATION. FIELD TESTING OF EXPERIMENTAL INSTALLATIONS INDICATES THAT THE LOUVERED SIGN DESIGN WILL REDUCE WIND LOADINGS UP TO 60 PERCENT. THE USE OF LOUVERED SIGN PANELS ON OVERHEAD TRUSSES WILL REALIZE APPROXIMATELY A 30 PERCENT REDUCTION IN STRUCTURAL MATERIALS WHEN COMPARED TO CURRENT DESIGN STANDARDS.
