TEMPERATURE EFFECTS ON CONTINUOUS REINFORCED CONCRETE BRIDGE

DURING 1968 AND 1969 AN INVESTIGATION WAS MADE OF THE RESPONSE TO DAILY TEMPERATURE CHANGES BY A THREE-SPAN CONTINUOUS TEST BRIDGE OF REINFORCED CONCRETE. THE STUDY COMPARED MEASURED EFFECTS WITH THE RESULTS COMPUTED FROM THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE OBSERVED TEMPERATURE VARIATIONS. OBSERVATIONS OF TEMPERATURES, STRAINS, AND REACTION CHANGES WERE MADE FOR THREE DAYS IN 1969. FROM THE SURFACE TEMPERATURES, THE TRANSIENT TEMPERATURE DISTRIBUTIONS AT VARIOUS TIMES WERE DETERMINED BY THE FINITE DIFFERENCE TECHNIQUE. THE MOMENTS AND REACTION CHANGES DUE TO THE TEMPERATURE DIFFERENTIALS WERE CALCULATED BY A MATRIX FORMULATION OF THE SLOPE DEFLECTION METHOD. THE ANALYSES WERE CARRIED OUT BY A COMPUTER PROGRAM ESPECIALLY WRITTEN FOR THE STUDY. A PARAMETER STUDY WAS PERFORMED TO DETERMINE THE INFLUENCE OF DIFFERENT MATERIAL PROPERTIES ON THE CALCULATED RESULTS. THE MEASURED EFFECTS ARE REPORTED AND EVALUATED WITH REFERENCE TO THE PREDICTED RESULTS. THE ACCURACY OF THE RESULTS AND THE UTILITY OF THEIR EVALUATION ARE LIMITED BY THE RELATIVE PAUCITY OF MEASURED DATA AND BY INSUFFICIENT INFORMATION ON THE MECHANICAL AND THERMAL PROPERTIES OF THE CONCRETE. HOWEVER, THE STUDY DEMONSTRATES THE FEASIBILITY OF THE ANALYSIS TECHNIQUE AND THE VALIDITY OF THE MATHEMATICAL MODEL USED.
