APPLICATION OF THE METHOD OF REFRACTED WAVES IN ACOUSTIC TESTS OF MARINE HYDRAULIC STRUCTURES
A method of pulsed ultrasonic acoustic testing was developed in the Lenmorniiproyekt Laboratory of Maintenance and Longevity of Structures. This method is intended for analyzing the condition of concrete in port structures. Since only one face of marine structures is usually accessible for testing, the method uses refracted waves instead of direct ones. By combining surface probing on a constant base with profile measurements, much information is derived on the condition of the concrete and on the extent of its imperfections. Hodographs were constructed from the direct and refracted waves. The thickness of the disintegrating layer is given by h = L/2 SQU.RT ((V-U)(VO) where L is the coordinate distance to the hodograph inflection; V is the direct wave speed in the disintegrating layer; U is the leading refracted wave velocity to the main concrete mass (the velocities being determined from the hodograph slope). Optimum measurement parameters were determined, and techniques of shifting a single receiver for above-water measurements and of using a set of 15--20 receivers for underwater measurements were developed. Methods for preparing the surface and for attaching the instruments with plaster of Paris are discussed. The test signals are displayed on a UZP-62 oscillograph and the screen is photographed with a Smena-2 camera which has a smooth film advance. This technique allows several oscillograms to be recorded on one frame.
