THE OPTIMUM TYPES AND PARAMETERS OF HOLD MACHINES FOR HANDLING UNITIZED LOADS

The requirements (projected in 1970) for hold machines to handle unitized cargoes of ships are discussed, and the degree to which present equipment and future designs will meet the requirements is analyzed. The largest cargo load on a pallet with overhang will measure 1 400 x 1 800 mm, stand 0.7--1.7 m high and weigh 0.9--2.0 T. Cargoes of 2 600--13 400 T will be carried by 32 types of freighters in which 90 percent of the between-deck cargoes must be moved 5 m, over half the hold stack height will be greater than 5m, and 60 percent of the between-deck space will have a height less than 3.5 m. These facts dictate that two types of machines will be required to mechanize completely all handling of unit cargoes: a fork-lift type vehicle (operated from the cargo space deck in the middle cargo holds) for stacking to heights up to 4 m; and machines hung from the hatch or resting on the cargo for loading to greater heights and for loading in end holds with irregular shapes. The requirements for the deck loader are: lifting capacity of 2 T; lift rise of 3.5m; swivelling of the fork lift to make dense stacks; productivity of 20--30 T/hr, and a machine weight of less than 5 T. The reqirements for the hanging machine are: lifting capacity of 2 T; a boom arm of 6.5 m; ability to stack up to 8 m, fitting the last stack in 0.8 m; a swivelling fork lift; productivity of 30 T/hr; weight of less than 5 T for each section; simple assembly in less than 30 minutes. Similar requirements are presented for the machine which would move over the load, except that it need stack only to 3 m and it must exert a pressure of less than 0.7 kg/cm squared. Several universal loaders and some specially designed loaders were tested, and all were found lacking in certain characteristics. Six variations of a hanging machine were also analyzed. It is felt that improvement of one of these designs will satisfy the hanging machine requirement. A modified universal fork lift will meet the requirements of the needed deck loader.
