A COMPUTER METHOD FOR DESIGNING THE OPTIMUM VERTICAL PROFILE OF HIGHWAYS
THE METHOD DESCRIBED IS A TWO-PART CYCLICAL PROCESS. PART ONE USES A QUADRATIC PROGRAMMING ALGORITHM TO DERIVE AN OPTIMUM SOLUTION FOR SPECIFIC INPUT COST DATA. IN PART TWO THIS SOLUTION IS ANALYSED TO PRODUCE DETAILS OF CUT AND FILL VOLUMES, AN OPTIMAL PROCEDURE FOR CARRYING OUT THE EARTHWORKS, AND REVISED COST DATA FOR INPUT TO PART ONE. IN GENERAL THREE CYCLES HAVE BEEN FOUND NECESSARY FOR CONVERGENCE. /RRL/
