APPROXIMATION METHOD FOR CALCULATING ELEMENTS OF MOTION PATH OF PROPELLED SHIP FORMATIONS
Differential equations of the motion of a ship in turns were investigated. The characteristic points and elements of the turn, such as the moment of approach of maximum ship displacement from the initial course to the side, a reverse turn, a small overshoot, length of water area, etc., were determined. On the basis of experimental data and estimates of a number of values in the differential equations, it is possible to make an approximate integration and to present formulas for calculating the basic parameters of a turn. This procedure is applicable not only to individual vessels, but also to ship formations, e.g., for determining the required turning-circle, diameter, and taking in account the formation width.
