A NEW CONCEPT IN FREEWAY LIGHTING
THE NEW HIGHWAY LIGHTING GEOMETRY OFFERS IMPROVEMENTS IN LIGHTING EFFECTIVENESS, REDUCES CONSTRUCTION COSTS AND LOWERS OPERATING AND MAINTENANCE EXPENSES. MODERN TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES DEMAND THAT THE ILLUMINATING ENGINEER PROPERLY SELECTS A LIGHTING SYSTEM GEOMETRY RELATED TO ROAD FUNCTIONAL DESIGN. THE LIGHTING SYSTEM DESCRIBED IN THIS PAPER, USED ON THE MACDONALD CARTIER FREEWAY NEAR TORONTO, INTRODUCES NEW GEOMETRICAL PROPORTIONS BY DRASTICALLY CHANGING THE LUMINAIRE MOUNTING HEIGHT, POLE SPACING AND OTHER RELATIVE DIMENSIONS AND ANGLES. THE DESIGNER CAN THUS ACHIEVE BETTER PAVEMENT UNIFORMITY, REDUCED LIGHTING GLARE, IMPROVED VISIBILITY AND LOWER CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATING COSTS.
