EVALUATING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SHIPBOARD CRANES

The capacity, operating speed, and deck location of shipboard cranes are discussed. A formula is given for computing operating speed as a function of load. Operating speeds ranging from 80 to 18.5 m/min are recommended for typical loads ranging from 2 to 12.5 tons. A curve which is obtained by plotting operating speed against load can be used to determine optimal speeds. Comparative data for several domestic and foreign cranes are given in a table, one made by the Hagglunds firm being the best. Cranes should be located so as to permit even unloading from all holds, where possible locating one crane where it can work on two holds. Cranes with differing capacity should alternate along the deck. An example of how correct location of cranes facilitates loading is given. Crane booms must extend 7 meters beyond the sides of a ship.
