THE OVERALL COMPRESSION BUCKLING OF PARTIALLY CONSTRAINED SHIP GRILLAGES
An explicit discrete beam solution is derived for biaxial compression buckling of an orthogonally stiffened-plate grillage with sides and ends which are elastically restrained against rotation. By using the Lundquist-Stowell plate buckling approximation, the solution for the completely general case with opposite edges which are unequally restrained can be obtained by a double calculation. A method is provided for quickly estimating these constraints, and for determining the coupled buckling effects from adjoining structure. The equations also allow for more realistic treatment of bending-torsion twisting of the stiffeners about their plate connection. Provision is also made to accommodate open or closed cross-section stiffeners having intact or perforated walls. The solution also allows for inelastic effects in perfectly plastic materials, and suggests possible treatment for strain hardening materials. Numerous checks reveal that accuracy of the solution is considered to be well within the 10-15% required for most design purposes. Typical ship examples indicate that practical constraints are closer to "clamped" than to "pinned" conditions, which can approximately double the buckling stresses. The solution makes possible a more accurate preliminary selection of structural members and reduces the time required for the more accurate computer analyses. However, though programmed for design use, further experimental data is required to confirm its validity.
