IN 1963, THE DEVELOPMENT OF GALLIUM ARSENIDE DIODE-A SOLID-STATE DEVICE FOR GENERATING INFRARED RADIATION-MADE POSSIBLE THE PRODUCTION OF LOW COST, SHORT- RANGE EDM EQUIPMENT. THE ADVANTAGES ARE (1) TIME SAVINGS - TAKES LESS TIME TO DO CONTROL AND STAKEOUT WORK, (2) LABOR SAVINGS - ONLY 2 MEN REQUIRED FOR A CREW; (3) EASIER TO USE, AND (4) BETTER ACCURACY. THE DISADVANTAGES ARE (1) COST, (2) WEIGHT, AND (3) ACCURACY DEPENDS ON THE DISTANCE BEING MEASURED.
