Quality Assurance
This chapter describes how quality assurance (QA) is a vital component of any legal alcohol testing program and it will help ensure the reliability and accuracy of alcohol concentrations reported for blood or other specimens. The scope of QA has been defined as any aspect of laboratory operation that can influence the quality of results produced. Obviously that includes ensuring the accuracy of the testing procedure but also covers many other areas such as having a comprehensive and accurate standard operating procedures (SOP) manual, effective staffing training, documented method validation, adequate instrument maintenance and demonstrated proficiency of individual analyst, data review and reporting. Each laboratory should have a well defined QA program that is documented in the SOP laboratory. This chapter deals mainly with blood alcohol testing related to impaired driving cases and postmortem toxicology.
