THE CONTAINER CONCEPT AND RELATED COSTS

The article discusses terminal charges and freight and handling charges for 20-ft containers and wooden cases of same dimension and weight. The costs from receiving on quay to delivery ex quay for container, pallet or conventional transportation is shown. The conclusion is that for most commodities, proper shipper packed units would be more rational than containers in a through-going transportation system and just as efficient in combating cargo pilferage. The container concept, it says, is promoted by supersalesmen and super-technocrats with sophisticated economic models based on large scale transportation, but they are completely out of touch with real life.
