CKS: TAIWAN'S 21ST CENTURY AIRPORT

Taipei/Chiang Kai Shek International Airport (CKS) some 25 miles southwest of Taipei, Taiwan, will handle up to 66,000 landings and takeoffs per year. The expansive terminal structure is equipped with the latest passenger handling and service systems. In the 150 ft high control tower, controllers have the latest ATC communications, radars, and field lighting equipment. Sophisticated navigational facilities have been installed at the new airfield for the guidance and control of modern jet aircraft. CKS is equipped for Category-11 landing/takeoff standards. The airport is equipped with solid state weather observation/monitoring devices, an automated Airport Management System (developed with the assistance of Boeing Aerosystems). A co-located VOR and TACAN (VORTAC) were installed to provide non-precision azimuth/distance guidance for terminal navigation. The Category-II airport lighting and automated terminal radar system are described, as well as the ACT/flight information (FIC) communications systems.
