Fixing the Strip
Older suburban corridors are often faced with increased retail vacancies and storefronts filled with businesses that do not generate sales tax. This article discusses how these commercial strips can be revitalized through the integration of planning and urban design. The proposed approach is based on the “complete streets” concept tat considers environmental and aesthetic issues in addition to transportation. Some of the recommendations for improving suburban corridors include asset management, market studies, adding walkable town centers, seeking buy-in from local businesses, aligning ordinances with design strategies, developing accurate baseline metrics, and implementing the plan.
