ARCTIC ICE DYNAMICS JOINT EXPERIMENT-BULLETIN NO. 19

This bulletin contains several reports. One reports the investigations into salinity variations in sea ice of varying thickness and age. Results show that salinity distribution in multiyear sea ice is dependent on ice topography and cannot be adequately represented by a single average profile. The second report deals with the 1972 interior flow field study and compares the results with studies previously conducted in 1970 and 1971. The third report deals with air friction and form drag on Arctic sea ice. The fourth report deals with mechanical models of ridging in the Arctic sea ice cover. These models agree with present observational knowledge and provide predictions which can be tested by future field experiments. A fifth paper reports on the spatial variability of topside and bottomside ice roughness and its relevance to underside acoustic reflection loss. An airplane using a laser profiler and a submarine using sonar plotted ice characteristics. Cross checking the results shows that within the marginal ice zone topside features correlate well with the bottomside features. A description is given of the digital data stored in the Aidjex Data Bank by Scientific regime or experiment.
