THE COMPACTION OF BITUMINOUS MATERIALS

The author explains that the traditionally accepted method of compacting bituminous materials in the UK has been by deadweight rollers. Reference is made to developments that have taken place in the design of static rollers, and to the Department of Transport specification for road and bridge works which specifies the use of 8/10 tonne static roller as the compaction equipment to be used in the main for the compaction of hot rolled asphalt and dense bitumen macadam. This is described as a materials specification as distinct from the end results specification used in Europe, and many states in the USA where heavy duty vibrating rollers, specifically designed for bituminous materials rolling can be used. Investigations are described into the performance of an 8 tonne static roller as compared with a 2-ton tandem vibrating roller with one vibrating drum when rolling and compacting hot rolled asphalt to BS 594; a 6.5 tonne twin drum vibrating roller compacting hot rolled asphalt to BS 594; and also dense bitumen macadam to BS 4987. The results obtained from these tests are presented and discussed, indicating for example that densities obtained after 12 passes with the 8-tonne static roller could be obtained with 8 vibrating passes. Figures on core densities and air voids are tabulated and discussed. It is suggested that the results obtained from the use of vibrating rollers on bituminous materials both in the UK and from Germany, Sweden and the usa indicate that there is a trend towards the acceptance and use of heavy duty purpose designed tandem vibrating rollers for the compaction of bituminous materials. /TRRL/
