INDUSTRIAL CONVERSION POTENTIAL IN THE SHIPBUILDING INDUSTRY

A review directed toward the problems a shipyard would face in attempting to convert production facilities from shipbuilding to another field. 160 industries were originally selected as having potentially attractive conversion features. 55 industries were selected for in-depth study as they showed the most promise for success. These industries represent going concern opportunities that shipyards can enter relatively intact. Since this research approach has been to compare each industry's potential attractiveness with a composite description of the shipbuilding industry, it is apparent that individual shipbuilders may find that their particular capabilities and corporate objectives would be satisfied best by entry into one or more of the lower ranked industries. Similarly, local action groups seeking non-defense uses for deactivated Navy yards, for instance, might encounter a similar situation, particularly if a shipyard is dismantled and conversion opportunities are sought in a piecemeal fashion rather than as a going concern. Yet going concern conversion is preferable to piecemeal conversion because it is less disruptive in its economic, social and regional aspects.
