Transit Systems Target Rail Safety

With the 2015 deadline for installation of positive train control (PTC) systems looming, this article describes what rail operators have done and plan to do. Triggered by the train collision in Chatsworth, California in September 2008, the Federal Railroad Administration’s Office of Safety Assurance and Compliance has provided funding for operators to upgrade their systems. The author of the article describes systems already in place and how they differ from one another, the difference between PTC and automatic train control, how to apply for FRA funding to aid in the cost of installing PTC, and what Metrolink has accomplished since the 2008 collision in Chatsworth that triggered the requirement that all operators install the safety equipment.
