TRANSPORTATION NOISE POLLUTION: CONTROL AND ABATEMENT CHAPTER VII, RECOMMENDATIONS FOR NOISE CONTROL

This chapter recommends indoor and outdoor community noise criteria and recommends transportation noise criteria for aircraft, automobiles, motorcycles, commercial trucks and buses, rapid transit and diesel trains, off-highway recreational vehicles, construction equipment, and vehicle operator and passenger compartments. This chapter also recommends new local, regional, state and federal organizational arrangements for dealing with noise pollution. Land use control, acoustical insulation requirements for buildings, enlightened local government purchasing practices, state and local regulation and licensing, vehicle inspection requirements on truck mufflers, aircraft certification, aircraft operational requirements, and transportation systems planning are put forward as specific methods for abating transportation noise. Recommendations are also made for further research on aircraft engine noise reduction, sonic boom reduction, tire noise abatement, improvements in exhaust muffler technology, reductions in railway wheel-rail and engine noise, and building sound-proofing technology.
