NEW CONSTRUCTION FACILITIES AT CAMMELL LAIRD SHIPBUILDERS LTD. BIRKENHEAD

The article describes one of the largest and most modern covered construction halls of its kind in the shipbuilding industry. The construction hall is the principal feature of a major reconstruction project designed to facilitate increased production and to enable fast accurate work to be consistently achieved throughout the whole construction process. Panel line construction methods are used, the plates being assembled and welded at specialized work stations and throughout the build-up process, wide use is made of integrated conveyor and craneage systems. The movement of parts, equipment and fabrications is by self-loading vehicles from pallet trucks to 100-ton self-elevating transporters. A feature of the scheme is that two ships can be constructed simultaneously under cover in the construction hall. Panels are joined to form units weighing up to 250-tons in the hall's assembly area and these are then transferred on to the covered slipway where they are welded together to form the ship under construction. As the ship lengthens, it is progressively jacked down the slipway so that subsequent sections can be added.
