SIMPLIFIED PROCEDURE FOR ESTIMATING DAM AND EMBANKMENT EARTHQUAKE-INDUCED DEFORMATIONS
The authors have presented a simplified and attractive procedure for estimating seismic-induced permanent deformation in small embankments, restricted, in application, to compacted soils that experience little reduction in strength due to cyclic loading. Although the procedure involves acceptable simplifying assumptions, it should be noted that some misleading results of seismic response computations, using equivalent linear technique in a finite element idealization, and unsuitable type of testing to predict seismic downward displacements along potential sliding surface, will further restrict the method for design purposes since it may lead to nonconservative results. This is not to be constructed as criticism of the assessment of earth dam seismic behavior based on permanent induced displacement criteria. In fact, an additional support is given to a nonrestricted application, provided the post-peak reduced strength of the materials can be properly assessed.
