The Price of a Walk-On Commuter Fare: 53P A Mile
Some London rail passengers are paying significantly more per mile than others depending on the train operator, even when the passengers are buying the same type of ticket, on the same day and at the same time. This article examines the fare differences. Some of the discrepancy can be attributed to a 1995 decision to charge more for lines with newer rolling stock. Even though the rolling stock has changed, the fare discrepancy persists. Rail operators maintain that fare discounts and differences in service quality make a comparison on price per mile alone misleading.
