Smart Choices for Biofuels
This paper addresses ways in which sustainable biofuels can be developed. The authors note that the interest in biofuels, though still substantial due to the security benefits of reducing dependence on imported oil, has declined because of the increase their use causes in feed grain, food, and soybean prices. In addition, it is thought that the biofuel industry is responsible for a variety of ecological problems, and also does not live up to its promise of reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Sustainable biofuels - that can participate in a new economy and be part of a renewable energy portfolio - would be valuable additions to the environmental protection arsenal.
