The Big Easy Gets Its Share
Louisiana has substantial plans for its share of federal stimulus funds. This article describes how the state has decided which projects will be funded. Among the projects being considered are new bike lanes, several public transit projects, an overhaul of an intermodal terminal at the Port of New Orleans, repairs for public housing developments, and a broad program to combat the blight cause by Hurricane Katrina in single-family neighborhoods. Although the Louisiana Recovery Authority is monitoring the flow of funding provided under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, a wide array of state and federal departments is deciding which projects get the money and in what amount. However, due to the tight deadlines, planners often are being left out of the loop by government officials.
