Performance of Warm Mix Technology in the Province of New Brunswick
The asphalt paving industry is constantly looking at new equipment and processes to improve the performance and efficiency of its products. The trend toward going green has given the asphalt industry the incentive to explore the warm mix approach. Warm mix is manufactured and placed at much lower temperatures (20 to 40 deg C) than conventional hot mix asphalt. The benefits of lower temperatures include a reduction in greenhouse gases, energy savings in the manufacturing process, and health and safety issues related to the fumes and odours at time of laydown. In 2007, the highway department of the Province of New Brunswick decided to do a small trial in the Saint John area utilizing warm mix technology so that they could evaluate the process. Based on the results of that trial, two larger contracts were called in 2008; one in northern New Brunswick and the second in the Moncton area. This paper gives an overview of the warm mix projects constructed by the Province of New Brunswick in 2007 and 2008. The focus is on the production, laydown and compaction of the warm mix and test data collected.
