CONSUMER HOUSEHOLD SHOPPING TRAVEL BEHAVIOR IN A HIGHWAY CORRIDOR AREA

RESEARCH WAS CONDUCTED TO ANALYZE COMSUMER HOUSEHOLD SHOPPING TRAVEL BEHAVIOR PATTERNS TO DETERMINE IF THERE WERE REAL DIFFERENCES IN INTER- AND INTRA-MARKET BEHAVIOR WITHIN THE CORRIDORS SELECTED FOR STUDY IN JEFFERSON COUNTY, ALABAMA. THE RESEARCH WAS DESIGNED TO FURNISH, IN ADDITION TO TRIP MOVEMENT INFORMATION, DATA THAT WOULD CONTRIBUTE TO VALIDATION OF INTER- AND INTRA-MARKET GRAVITY AND POTENTIAL MODELS. IT ALSO ALLOWED THE TESTING OF A SERIES OF HYPOTHESES DERIVED FROM THE BAUMOL-IDE GENERALIZATIONS, INCLUDING: (1) THAT THE OPTIMUM VARIETY IN A FUNCTIONAL RETAIL CENTER IS INDEPENDENT OF DISTANCE, (2) THAT LARGE FUNCTIONAL RETAIL CENTERS HAVE LARGER MARKET AREAS BECAUSE OF THE GREATER PROBABILITY THAT CONSUMERS WILL FIND ALL THEIR NEEDS SATISFIED ON A MULTI-PURPOSE SHOPPING TRIP, AND (3) THAT SMALL COMMUNITIES WITH A SMALL FUNCTIONAL RETAIL CENTER TEND TO HAVE ASYMMETRIC MARKET AREAS, DEFLECTED AWAY FROM THE LARGEST CENTER. SHOPPING TRAVEL BEHAVIOR OF HOUSEHOLDS WITHIN THE NORTH AND SOUTH PORTIONS OF THE TRAVEL BEHAVIOR CORRIDOR DEPICTED A RATIONAL, COST-CONSCIOUS APPROACH (MINIMUM TIME-DISTANCE RELATIONSHIPS) TO THE PROCESS OF OBTAINING CONVENIENCE GOODS. EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE FROM BOTH CORRIDORS INDICATES THAT THE ATTRACTIVENESS OF BIRMINGHAM FUNCTIONAL RETAIL CENTERS IS DIRECTLY AFFECTED BY DISTANCE AND COMPETING FUNCTIONAL RETAIL CENTERS. ZONAL DELINEATIONS BASED ON DRIVING-TIME-INDIFFERENCE POINTS WERE FOUND TO BE RELIABLE, ESPECIALLY WHERE POPULATION CONCENTRATIONS WERE RELATIVELY HIGH. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT INTRAZONAL AND INTERZONAL ANALYSES BASED ON THE TRADITIONAL ORIGIN-DESTINATION STUDIES MUST BE USED WITH GREAT CAUTION. THERE IS A POSITIVE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DEVELOPMENT PATTERNS AND NEW HIGHWAYS, BUT THERE ARE OTHER EXAMPLES OF INVESTMENT THAT CAUSE CHANGES IN TRAVEL BEHAVIOR, FOR EXAMPLE POPULATION EXPANSION. ALL PARAMETERS AFFECTING TRAVEL BEHAVIOR IN AN AREA MUST BE UTILIZED TO INSURE MAXIMUM EFFECTIVENESS OF LONG-RANGE PLANNING FOR THE GROWTH OF AN AREA. /AUTHOR/
