The Influence of Facilities for Multitasking on Individual’s Travel Decisions in the Context of Work Trips
With increasing time pressure, one of the advantages of public transport, especially the train, over the car is the possibility that travelers can do some work or relax. This positive feature may be enhanced if trains would have modern facilities to allow such multitasking. Marketing efforts could focus on facilities for multi-tasking. To better understand underlying decision making processes, a conjoint choice study was conducted to investigate the effects of the urgency of a work activity and the facilities offer for multitasking on travel choices. In this paper three multinomial logit models are described, one for mode choice, one for departure time choice, and one for moment choice. The model estimation process of the separate models shows that the urgency of the work activity influences the choice of departure time and moment to carry out a suggested work activity. It does not however influence the choice of transport mode. The presence of internet connection, work compartments, and special equipment for work has a limited effect on investigated travel choices.
