SOLIDS RETENTION IN ANAEROBIC WASTE TREATMENT SYSTEMS
Results of a laboratory study on the biological solids retention time aspects of anaerobic waste treatment showed that below a solids retention time of 10 days ( 35 C ), treatment efficiency decreased rapidly to zero; anaerobic biological solids will flocculate in a manner similar to aerobic sludges, but excessive turbulence can destroy flocculation; chemical coagulation can be used to aid separation of anaerobic biological solids; and anaerobic systems can achieve a BOD reduction of over 90%, independent of temperature within the range of 25 to 35 C.
