Developing a Regional Decision Support System for Houston-Galveston Region

The Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) was awarded a FHWA Eco-Logical grant in 2008. H-GAC will use this funding to comply with the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU), by completing a regional decision support system for the 8-county region to incorporate environmental planning with long range transportation planning. H-GAC has convened a group of resource agencies and conservation organizations to assist with the development of this model. The model will incorporate a series of metrics to provide a value that prioritizes areas with high ecological value. The results of the workgroup’s efforts will be made publicly available in several formats: on the H-GAC website (http://www.h-gac.com), through presentation and adoption by H-GAC’s Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) and Transportation Policy Council (TPC), public meetings held monthly. The representatives of the TAC and the TPC are composed of elected officials from throughout the 8-county H-GAC region. H-GAC will also incorporate review of the regional decision support system into its transportation project prioritization process and the 2040 Regional Transportation Plan.
