MODERN SYSTEMS OF PORT TRAFFIC CONTROL

The growth of maritime trade and in the size of ships, with their very different degrees of manoeuvrability, and the consequent congestion in ports has led many port authorities to consider measures for port traffic control. This paper discusses various aspects of a centralized traffic control system, including the general structure of such a system, the sensors employed, methods of transmitting information, and data processing and presentation. The paper also considers methods for securing optimal berthing procedures. The paper concludes with a brief description of the port installations at Le Havre and the steps now being taken to improve the system.
