The year of the rapid transit
A recent conference provided evidence of growing interest in bus rapid transit in a variety of UK towns and cities. This article discusses the inter-urban Cambridgeshire Guided Busway, connecting Cambridge and St Ives along disused railway trackbed, with prioritised bus services onwards over public roads to Huntingdon. Just as significant is Swansea Metro, the project that could finally allow First's 'ftr' concept to prove its potential after its faltering beginnings in York and Leeds. The two systems are designed to offer an affordable alternative to rail in two different applications, one interurban the other within a small city, with quality infrastructure including attractive tram-style stops and real-time information.
