This article examines the various types of vehicle lifts available and the technological improvements that have made them safer and less environmentally polluting. Types of lift designs include: in-ground, surface-mounted, multli-post runway, mobile, parallelogram, and scissor. The author provides a brief history of the earliest lifts designed for cars and used for a half-century before it was found in the 1980s that the hydraulic oil buried underground sometimes leaked into local water supplies. He writes about four different manufacturers and the pros and cons of their products: These include Mohawk Lifts, Rotary Lift’s, Railquip Inc., and Stertil-Koni.
