SYSTEM OF ROUTE COSTING FOR THE BUS INDUSTRY
ROUTE COST FIGURES ARE BASED ON EIGHT STATISTICS: MILEAGE ON EACH ROUTE, RECEIPTS FOR EACH ROUTE, PEAK VEHICLE DEMAND (PVD), DEFINITIONS OF THE PEAK, UNIT COST, UNIT MILEAGE, DIRECT MOVEMENT COST, AND AVERAGE SPEED FOR EACH ROUTE. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT BOTH MILEAGE AND RECEIPTS BE CORRECTLY ALLOCATED TO THE ROUTES. THE ALLOCATION OF VEHICLES TO ROUTES MUST ALSO BE DEALT WITH AT THE SAME TIME, FOR IT IS IMPORTANT THAT PVD ALLOCATION CORRESPONDS WITH THE ALLOCATION OF MILEAGE AND RECEIPTS. THE ROUTE COST FIGURES HAVE NOT ONLY TO BE PRODUCED; THEY ALSO HAVE TO BE INTERPRETED. THE SUCCESS OR FAILURE OF SERVICE ALTERATIONS DEPENDS, ULTIMATELY, NOT ON STATISTICS, BUT ON THE SPECIALIST ACUMEN OF THE TRAFFIC (OR OPERATING) MANAGEMENT. /AUTHOR/
