The Importance of Interregional Refueling Availability to the Purchase Decision
This paper examines the effect of expanding the number of alternative fueling stations, independent of usage, on the attractiveness of an alternative fuel vehicle. A survey was administered that asked about trading off purchase price with refueling availability. Respondents could make their own refueling network and ranked stations in importance. Initial findings showed that multi-vehicle households find much greater value in a vehicle with a limited infrastructure. One station in a driver's hometown results in a vehicle retaining 20%-50% of its value for multi-vehicle households but that was mostly zero for one vehicle households. A 10-station networks providing mobility throughout one’s activity space results in a vehicle retaining 55%-100% of its value for multi-vehicle households, and 0% to 100% for one vehicle households. A full-scale survey would be needed to validate results.
