Northern Light
Forty years after its original tram network closed, Bergen, Norway, is reintroducing light rail, the first city in the nation to do so. In a strategic plan to increase public transportation usage in Bergen and the Hordaland region by 50%, a core element is the light rail line. The author examines why Bergen, which pioneered toll use for road network improvement, is building a light rail line in three phases. An overview of transportation development and funding in the Bergen area is given, as well as information on the construction and operation of the new tram line.
