I2v Communication In Europe: The Implementation Of Coopers Services In Austria

This paper reports on a decision by Austria's motorway operator, ASFINAG, to take part in the Cooperative Systems for Intelligent Road Safety (COOPERS) project, a large scale European research project which focuses on co-operative traffic management. The goal of the COOPERS project is to establish safety-related service communication using two-way communication between road infrastructure and vehicles. The authors describe the efforts taken by ASFINAG to implement these services within its already-established systems and its road infrastructure, with special emphasis on the transformation from sensor data to meaningful COOPERS service messages. For the purposes of short-range communication, 20 variable message system (VMS) gantries along the 20-kilometer-long test corridor will be equipped with a so called roadside unit (RSU), enabling infrastructure-to-vehicle (I2V) communication in both directions. On site testing according to COOPERS plans is scheduled to start at the end of November 2008 and will last to mid 2009. Within this timeframe, long-range communication (broadcast) of COOPERS service messages will also be initiated and some short-range communication points will be updated with CALM-M5 technology. COOPERS officially ends in early 2010, at which time all results should be published.
