LNG IMPORTATION AND TERMINAL SAFETY

In 1970 the Coast Guard requested the Committee on Hazardous Materials to undertake a detailed evaluation of the present knowledge base for the safe importation of liquefied natural gas, since this was a relatively new bulk cargo. (Previously the committee had recommended certain investigations on LNG which were conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and led to the observations of the LNG-water reactions previously known to a few but not widely disseminated nor adequately explained.) Following a series of presentations by experts at committee meetings during 1971, the decision was made to schedule a conference at which the "state-of-knowledge" would be critically reviewed, in the context of the Coast Guard concern for safety of the public. The conference reported herein was the results of this decision. These proceedings are available to the conferees, and to other interested personnel.
