Evaluation Of Driver'S Behavior For Vehicle-Infrastracture Cooperative System In Tochigi DSSS
This paper reports on a project that evaluated driver behavior with the use of a vehicle-infrastructure cooperative system called Tochigi DSSS. The Universal Traffic Management Society of Japan (UTMS Japan), under the auspices of the National Police Agency, is researching driving support systems incorporating road-to-vehicle communication technology, and has been conducting operation tests in four regions (Tochigi, Aichi, Kanagawa and Hiroshima prefectures). In Tochigi DSSS, operation tests were performed on public roads in Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture in FY2007. The program in Tochigi has been focusing on a system to improve the visibility of motorcycles. The authors discuss the background to traffic collisions, the components of the driving support system, and efforts to evaluate the effect of the system on driver behavior. The authors conclude that their experimental results confirm that the cooperative systems have a positive effect on safety. In particular, motorcycle driver behavior that confirms the traffic congestion ahead, to the rear when turning left, and to oncoming vehicles when turning right, was improved (in Japan, vehicles drive on the left).
