COST COMPARISON FOR TRANSPORTING LNG BY UNIT TRAINS AND BY OCEAN TANKERS
The annual increase in demand for natural gas on the East Coast triggered this study of shipping costs from the Gulf Coast. LNG from foreign sources is becoming competitive with pipeline shipments to this market. A cost comparison is made between a unit train and a tanker carrying LNG from the Gulf Coast to the East Coast. The conclusions show that for a unit-train to be competitive would require (1) doubling the present unit-train speed of 20 mph, (2) reduction of the present railroad shipping rate by a factor of 3, and (3) the price of foreign LNG and tanker rates to escalate a significant amount.
