TANKER ACCIDENT STUDY

This report summarizes the activities of the American Petroleum Institute Tanker Accident Study Committee directed toward improving the safety of tank washing and gas freeing very large tankers. The report is the second to be issued and covers a period from Fall 1970 through Fall 1971. The activities include a statistical study of past tanker explosions as relates to tank washing, experimental work on tank washing procedures and atmospheric control, and a study of possible ignition sources. The work was done by the TASC member companies, their subsidiaries and affiliates, and TASC consultants. The recommendations made are based on the data and information available at this time. As the work is a portion of an on-going program, these recommendations may have to be modified as additional information becomes available. The data and details of the test work are given in the reports referenced in each section.
