This article describes the design and construction of the replacement bridge over Biloxi Bay. The old bridge, destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, carried close to 35,000 vehicles per day. The article describes the various challenges faced by engineers, such as ensuring that one lane of the new bridge would be open in each direction in 18 months and that the entire bridge, designed to carry three lanes in each direction, would be open in under two years. The article relates in detail how precast construction and a design-build delivery method resulted in the bridge's completion in just 22 months.
