Upgrading Paves the Way for Network Expansion
This article focuses on the strategic plan implemented by the Russian Railways (RZD). Divided into two stages and titled "Strategy for Developing Rail Transport in the Russian Federation", the plan calls for a significant expansion of the rail network. Stage One (2008-2015), involves the renewal and upgrading of the existing infrastructure, the start of planning and surveying work for expansion, and beginning the construction on some of the high priority lines. Stage Two (2016-2030) will focus on creating the infrastructure necessary for developing new areas of economic growth, achieving a high level of technology, and improving the competitiveness of the Russian rail transport system. The article discusses the development of high speed rail lines in Russia, focusing on international transit corridors, investment sources for rail development, and Russia's overall transportation objectives.
