Development of Speed Advisory for Commercial Vehicles Based on Environmental Conditions

This paper focuses on the technical components necessary to provide a speed recommendation as part of a commercial vehicle onboard monitoring suite. The monitoring suite is intended to provide real-time feedback to the driver and to serve as a record, possibly for delayed feedback to the driver, for fleet management. This speed recommendation can also be used as a standalone dynamic intelligent speed advisory system. For either use, the speed recommendation is determined by several factors: prevalent speed of traffic surrounding the truck, rollover stability, the default road speed limit, and road slip. The road speed limit is obtained from internal map using GPS location. Traffic speed is estimated using remote sensors. Road surface is also monitored by sensor to estimate slip. Finally, simple vehicle dynamics are used for estimating the rollover stability progressively: approaching curve, on the curve and begin to roll. The authors discuss the issues associated with implementation of this type of speed recommendation, as well as the results obtained from field tests of the equipment. They call for future research to include incorporating the environmental factors such road geometry/road grade coupled with curve, superelevation, and road slip in more complicated truck dynamics for the better estimation of recommended speed and following distance.
