Dangerous Driving Deterrence System that Employs Competition
This article proposes a safe driving promotion system, which displays real-time driving scores and rankings to drivers. The system is designed to rouse a competitive spirit, which will improve driving behavior. The authors report on a driving simulation study undertaken to measure the effectiveness of this safe driving promotion system. Time gaps, the frequency of sudden deceleration, and the number of lane changes were compared using four conditions: control, slogan, warning, and competition conditions. The results of the experiment suggest that the competition condition, which simulated our proposal, most effectively deters dangerous driving. This system, which uses competition, can bring sufficient time gaps, gradual deceleration, and fewer lane changes than other types of systems. The authors contend that this system may be particularly effective for drivers who typically employ risky driving behaviors.
