Structural and Functional Properties of Mineral Fillers Modified with Hydrated Lime
The main focus of this paper was on baghouse fines from a dust extractor installed in Hot-Mix Asphalt (HMA) plants used as mineral fillers. The tested materials included basalt, melaphyre, dolomite and limestone fillers. The main purpose of the paper was to assess the basic structural and functional properties of fillers modified with Ca(OH)2 in comparison with the characteristics of limestone fillers, as well as search for the relationships between the structure and the selected functional properties of fillers. The paper contains laboratory test results of the structural characteristics and functional properties of fillers. The following tests of the structural characteristics were used: the Grain-Size Distribution using a laser method, Specific Surface Area using the Blain’s method, Rigden Voids of dry compacted fillers and Methylene Blue Value. Tests of the functional properties included an Increase in the Softening Point of mastics using the Ring & Ball method, Bitumen Number, Volumetric Mass Concentration and Activity Index of fillers. The values of an Increase in the Softening Point and Bitumen Number are used to determine the stiffening effect of fillers in mastics, while the Volumetric Mass Concentration and Activity Index indicate bitumen absorption and water sensitivity of fillers using cosmetic kerosene. A comparative analysis of the structural and functional properties of fillers was carried out on the basis of laboratory test results for pure fillers and fillers modified with Ca(OH)2. This analysis allowed for drawing a conclusion on the significance of Ca(OH)2 addition for the changes in the structural and functional properties of fillers. Statistical analysis showed that there are relationships between the structural features and some functional properties of fillers which let to evaluate the models for multiple linear regression.
