The ABC of BRT
Every level of local bus service can be improved through use of bus rapid transit (BRT). BRT differs from other bus systems in that it uses busways (dedicated bus lanes), usually found in the middle of the roadway, flanked by regular traffic lanes. New technology and improved infrastructure offer a travel experience similar to train but without train's massive infrastructure investment. BRT routing and stations are discussed. BRT systems around the globe, particularly those in Bogota, Colombia, and Curitiba, Brazil, are mentioned. In South Africa, BRT is planned for cities such as Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Port Elizabeth. South African BRT systems should massively expand the public transportation market and introduce measures directly benefiting those currently employed by the taxi industry, which will largely be replaced by BRT in many parts of affected cities.
