Asphalt Transitions in the 20 – 90° C Range
This paper describes how asphalt is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons. The mechanical and thermodynamic behavior of asphalt is sensitive to various factors including crude source and processing methods. One important factor related to the critical performance of pavement is the transitory nature of asphalt as the temperature varies. For instance, starting from a low temperature of -40 °C and heating asphalt at a uniform temperature rate to a temperature of 100 °C, one can observe the transition from glassy solid to viscoelastic solid to viscoelastic fluid and finally to Newtonian fluid. This investigation is concerned with capturing this transitory nature of asphalt in the range 20 to 90 °C. Two types of asphalt are used in this investigation, one is an air blown material and the other is the blended material. All the materials are tested in unaged, short-term aged and long-term aged conditions. The dynamic shear rheometer is used and the sample is sheared in the oscillatory mode while subjecting simultaneously to a temperature sweep from 90 to 20 °C. Linear viscoelastic parameters such as strain and frequency were established from strain sweep test and were used to capture the transition point. The transition point is defined as the temperature at which the storage modulus and loss modulus cross each other. For the same strain level, at higher frequency, the elastic component of the response dominates and hence transition occurs at higher temperature. The transition temperature increases as the material ages. Likewise the transition temperatures for the blown material are consistently higher for the same frequency and amplitude. Considering the drastic change in torque and normal force as a transition point, around 60° C, a transition point is seen when observing the normal force and torque data as a function of temperature.
