Public Transport Gender Audit Evidence Base

The authors discuss a study regarding women's use of public transit. They note that women tend to use public transit much more often than men, and this is especially true for bus transit riders. Women are not necessarily a homogeneous group, and they differ among themselves regarding travel patterns, commuting, access to transportation, employment, child care and elder care responsibilities, income, age, and other demographic variables. Nevertheless, women as a group are distinct from men in their transit ridership and needs. The report elaborates on the above points, and presents a gender audit checklist, which can help public transit authorities and providers focus on retaining women as transit riders.
