OIL POLLUTION OF THE OCEAN

Oil pollution is the almost inevitable consequence of our dependence on a largely oil based technology. The paper attempts to assess the influx of petroleum and petroleum products to the ocean. Oil pollution is discussed. Petroleum and most petroleum products are toxic to most marine organisms and long term and low level effects may be as severe as or more severe than the immediate toxicity. Oil analysis should aid in law enforcement. The paper ends with a discussion of long-term outlook. (Author)
