WHEELS, TYRES AND AXLES

The typical railway wheel set with wheels pressed on to the axle and tyres shrunk on to the wheels has been with us now for more than one hundred years. Traditionally the expertise in this branch of technology rests with steel makers, railway wheel shopmen and metallurgists. We are now approaching an era in which substantial changes may have to be made in established forms of design, or material, or manufacturing methods, and it may therefore be of value to review established practice, to describe current practice, and to indicate the directions of possible future changes with particular reference to BR and LTE.
